A website handover checklist for business owners

Before you sign off, check ownership, access, editing instructions and support so you can run your website confidently.

Confirm who owns each account

Ask whose name is on the domain registration, hosting and website platform. You should understand what can be transferred and any platform restrictions before work begins. Use account invitations rather than sharing passwords in email.

Agree on ongoing costs

Document hosting, domain renewal, paid plugins, email and any maintenance plan. Check renewal dates and who pays each bill. Design and development fees do not automatically cover every future subscription.

Review the real customer journey

Open the site on a phone and a computer. Send a test enquiry, check that it arrives where expected and confirm that contact links are yours. For a shop, use the payment provider's test mode to check checkout and order messages before accepting real orders.

Get the files and editing instructions

Agree which source files, design assets and platform access are included. Ask for a short recorded walkthrough showing how to change text, swap photos and find enquiries. Keep a written list of account links and file locations, without putting passwords in a public document.

Put support in writing

Separate fixes for agreed work from new features or content changes. Confirm the support period, how to report an issue and what happens afterward. Pixelpaper Studio's handover includes a video walkthrough and an access sheet; your written proposal should confirm the support and ownership arrangements for your chosen platform.
